Little Free Library

Troop 28843 – Little Free Library

Little Free Library (LFL), Charter #48082, was built by Girl Scout Troop 28843. This LFL is located in the Connoquenessing Park (228 Constitution Ave, Connoquenessing, PA 16027). The girls created the LFL mostly out of supplies they had at home, and a grandpa of one of the girls then assembled it for the Troop. The Troop Leaders asked multiple local businesses if they could put it on their property but did not get any positive responses until they spoke with Francis Smith from the Connoquenessing Borough Council. He loved the idea and immediately invited them to the next Council meeting at the Connoquenessing Park office, which was in December 2016. The girls brought their LFL and proudly explained to them, and the residents in attendance, that this was their Take-Action project for their World of Girls Journey. They explained what a LFL was, and the reason they loved the idea of the library was because during their Journey they learned that not all people have access to books and that some towns have no libraries. They voted to build a Little Free Library and put it in a location that wasn’t near a library but still accessible to the public. The Connoquenessing Borough Council members happily voted “yes” to allow them to put it in their Park. Troop 28843’s Little Free Library is for all ages, please come visit it and “Give a Book / Take a Book”. The girls plan to add to their LFL by planting a garden, building a bench, and painting a mural on the wall behind it with future Take-Action projects. This can also be found on the World Map at: https://littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap/

The Troop 28843 are currently Brownies and will be bridging to Juniors in June 2017. Their Troop has grown from 5 young Daisies returning in 2015 to an energetic 14 Brownies now. Five of the girls achieved the exceptional Summit Award which is a pin given to those that have completed all three Journeys for their Girl Scout level. Their previous Take-Action projects include building a “Turtle Walk” at Preston Park as well as cleaning up around both ponds and planting wildflowers for their Wonders of Water Journey. They also planted 50 assorted tulips in an existing garden near the front of Northwest School to make it more cheerful in the springtime. They were able to get outside lighting installed at the church where they meet for safety reasons for their Quest Journey. By supporting Girl Scouts through their MagNut fundraising in the Fall or their delicious cookies this Winter, you are not only supporting young leaders but also helping them improve the community around them. We are all connected in the same circle of caring as they learned during their finalJourney. More information about the Girl Scouts of Western PA organization can be found at www.gswpa.org
